Hi, I’m Naomi Symmonds.
Thank you for taking the time to visit my website!
My contact details can be found under the ‘About’ tab in the dropdown menu under ‘Contact’.
I have recently graduated with a 2:1 at the University for Creative Arts in Farnham, studying Three Dimensional Design: Glass.
I like to create work that makes social/political commentary, most notably about war, and more specifically – the Iraq war, which was started in 2003. I use glass as a vehicle to express certain aspects of the war, to create statements and to engage the viewer in a discussion about the realities that we face. Unfortunately, personally, I lost my brother diffusing live cluster bombs in Iraq at the start of the war, which has led me to become so interested in the subject, and by producing this work, I hope to engage with you too.
My most recent work is a commemorative wall that looks at the two sides of the Iraq war, one side representing the Western troops, and the other side representing the Iraqi civilians and the destruction to their country. I have posted up my artist statement for this project, and the press release published on the front page of the UCA website, which in turn was published in four newspapers. Following this, I was asked to speak on the radio with BBC Surrey and BBC South, and was involved in a TV interview with BBC South Today to talk about my work and journey. These links can be found in the Posts section here on my website and for regular updates you can visit my Facebook page and connect with me! www.facebook.com/naomi.symmonds
I am now currently the Foundation Link Artist in Residence at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham. I am responsible for an increase in internal progression of Foundation students from all four of the UCA campuses. I am trying to encourage this by running taster workshops, giving artist talks and taking students on tours around the Glass, Ceramics, Jewellery and Metalwork facilities.
Please, feel free to make comments, share information, exhibitions and artists that work in similar ways or around similar subject matter. I love to network and I am always willing to talk to new people about ideas and expand upon my circle of peers!
I am interested in collaborating with others, engaging in commissions, competitions, exhibitions, events and conferences!
Enjoy your visit!
